About this place
Whether you’re in the mood for a generous serving of karaage or a night centred on pasta and pizza, Bistro 'olu'olu offers plenty of choice. The menu ranges from izakaya-style snacks to Western-style dishes, making it easy to put together a meal to suit your appetite.
Among the house specialities are karaage seasoned with Okinawan salt and ginger-flavoured karaage. The signature karaage is also available with toppings and sauces such as grated daikon with ponzu, sweet-and-sour sauce and a savoury spicy sauce. One diner ordered a karaage set meal and described it as a generous portion. It’s worth considering whether you want a full set meal or a few different flavours to share as snacks. For something lighter, there’s homemade, fluffy dashimaki (Japanese rolled omelette) and beef-sinew stew made with wagyu. Small plates, beer, wine and cocktails are also on the menu, so you can make the meal as much about the food—or the drinks and a dish or two—as you like.
For a Western-style option, 'Olu'olu’s PePe-tama is described as taking the best of peperoncino and carbonara. Other pasta choices include bacon and mushroom in homemade tomato sauce, clam vongole bianco and shrimp in genovese cream sauce. Pizzas range from margherita to chicken with teriyaki mayonnaise. One visitor recalled stopping in for dinner with a child and enjoying ragù spaghetti, bruschetta and pizza. Another ordered a shrimp and avocado fresh spring roll, but switched to a shrimp-and-mentaiko version when avocado was unavailable. The breadth of the menu makes it easy to choose dishes to suit the group and the mood of the day.
